One North East Regional Assembly on Village Notes

According to the blurb on their website, the North East Assembly (NEA) is at the centre of the regional agenda on a whole range of issues affecting the lives of people who live and work in the North East of England. They claim to be making a tangible contribution on issues that matter to people in the North East. However, critics argue that the assembly is nothing more than an expensive talking shop.

Interestingly, the North East Regional Assembly exists despite an emphatic 78% of North East electroate voting against a similar proposal for an elected North East assembly in a referendum on the subject that was held in 2004.

The North East Assembly (NEA) claims to have an important role in shaping the future development of the region by:

  • setting the strategic framework for planning, housing, transport and sustainable development in North East England;
  • making sure that One NorthEast, the regional development agency, is accountable to the region;
  • working with partners to improve the economy, the environment and people's quality of life; and
  • creating space for debate and a strong voice for the region nationally and internationally.
